Pakistani comedian and television host Tabish Hashmi has paid tribute to national heroes by sharing a rare and emotional photograph. The picture features Squadron Leader Muhammad Usama Ashfaq, the Pakistan Air Force officer who shot down an Indian Rafale fighter jet during Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs.
The Historic Photo from PAF Academy
Hashmi revealed that the photo was taken back in 2005 at the PAF Academy Risalpur during the All Pakistan Declamation Contest finals. In his Instagram post, the comedian proudly pointed out Usama Ashfaq standing next to him. The squadron leader later emerged as a true hero, earning the Sitara-e-Jurat for his bravery in the recent operation.
Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs
In May 2025, India launched missile strikes on five locations inside Pakistan. The Pakistan Air Force responded swiftly and decisively. Within days, PAF fighter jets downed six Indian aircraft, including three advanced Rafale jets, and destroyed a drone.
Transitioning from defense to counter-offense, the Pakistan military targeted key Indian airbases and defense systems. Notably, PAF’s JF-17 Thunder fighters, armed with hypersonic missiles, successfully destroyed India’s advanced S-400 Air Defense System, showcasing superior air power.
A Tribute to Courage
Hashmi emphasized that the photo carried deep emotional value as it brought back memories of his peers, many of whom went on to serve the nation. He praised Squadron Leader Usama Ashfaq for his unmatched courage and sacrifice.
National Sentiment
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that the actions from April 22 to May 10, 2025 were part of Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs, officially known as Ma‘rakah al-Haqq (The Battle of Truth). Pakistan’s response highlighted resilience and strength in the face of Indian aggression.
